Study Abroad

Big Cats

Not a huge dog and puppy fan? How bout cats? In this case, we're talking about "Big Cats" such as lions, tigers, cheetahs and panthers! They are incredibly beautiful creatures but they definitely have a bite to them. The lion, or "King of the Jungle" as some people say, is truly the King, even though he lives nowhere near a jungle. One roar is all it takes to set the standings in his world.

The Cheetah on the other hand, is the fastest animal on land. Reaching speeds up to 75MPH they are not "royalty", but they would definitely be the champion in a running competition. And we cant forget about the tigers. These majestic beasts are known for their coloring and stripes. Besides their popular orange color, tigers can also come in white (these are commonly called Siberian  tigers).

Fish

Who does'nt love a pet goldfish? They are easy to take care of and they're easy to get along with. As long as they're fed and cleaned, they're happy. Nowadays, more and more people are buying fish and setting up impressive aquariums. It has become quite a hobby for some people, and although the cost can vary, the end result is amazing. Fresh water tanks can hold fish such as Koi, while saltwater tanks can be home to yellow tang, starfish and even jellyfish. Once the fish have settled in, they provide endless amounts of entertainment and are especially great for kids.

Birds

Owls are all the rage right now. They are extremely popular in the fashion world and can be found on clothes, jewelry and some people even use their feathers in their hair (fake of course) as extensions. They are considered some of the wisest birds on the planet.

Looking for a more colorful bird? Then a parrot would be the perfect fit for you. Not only do they come in memorizing colors but they can also talk! Cockatoos are a close cousin of the Parrot and can speak up to 75 words!

Although most birds can not speak, they sure can sing and keep a melody! Each type of bird has a very distinct sound which is how some people identify them when they can not physically see them. Here at InGallery we love the beautiful city of Paris. From the Eiffel Tower to all the fashion, here are four reasons why we can't get enough of this amazing city:

1. The Eiffel Tower

If you ever get the chance to visit Paris...take it! Visit all the attractions that you can and make the Eiffel Tower a top priority on your list. It's considered one of the most recognizable and famous landmarks in the entire world. It was created by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the Centennial Exposition of 1889 and has since been a structure that people flock to when they visit. 

If you're not afraid of heights, be sure to make your way to the observation deck. Whether it's the morning, afternoon or night, there is no bad time to go up and see the view. On a clear day, you're able to see up to 50 miles away! While you're up there, look for the cities other famous landmark -  the Arc de Triomphe.

2. Food

Paris has scrumptious food. All you have to do is walk down the street and into one of the many street lined cafe's or restaurants. Swimming/Diving

Get your bathing suits ready! The swimming events are some of the most watched events of the whole Olympic games. Think Michael Phelps will win the gold again this year? Sailing

There's nothing calmer than watching sail boats float by on a nice day. During the Olympics though, this calm pastime event turns into an incredibly intense competition. The boats are fast and the sailors are even faster. Watch as they hang off the sides of their vessels to steer the boat quickly around an obstacle or even around each other. In addition to the obstacle race, there are also team and individual races as well. The event continues for the next two weeks.

Soccer

GOALLLLLLLLLLL! Another popular sport to watch during the Olympics is soccer, or football as most countries call it. This event takes place over the entire length of the Olympic games with the medal ceremony on August 11th. This week, we are proud to present our inaugural artist profile, a bestselling painter on InGallery.com: the lovely Jennifer Garant! From martini glasses to French chef paintings, Jennifer’s work has livened up kitchens and living rooms all over the world. We caught up with her to ask some questions about her work, her inspirations and most importantly, the fantastic paintings we get to hang in our homes:

Q: What is your background as an artist? Have you always known it’s what you wanted to be?

Jennifer Garant: I started drawing and painting when I was very young. I remember getting into big trouble as a kid for drawing with crayons inside my closet on the walls, and on the hardwood floors under the living room sofas.

I’m basically a self-taught artist, although I did attend two art schools for just a couple semesters. Even though I was discouraged to try and be an artist, I knew that’s what I wanted to be.

In my early twenties, I worked at jobs that I knew I wouldn’t want to do long term, just so I could focus on becoming an artist. So I worked eight hours a day at a lathe mill pulling lathe of the saw and stacking them. I also got a job peeling potatoes for a French fry wholesaler all day long; then I would paint late at night. I worked very hard on my art and feel proud and lucky to be able to paint full-time.

Q:  How do you draw inspiration for your collection? Your works are centered on themes of food, wine and chefs – how did this happen and what do you love about it? 

Jennifer Garant:  I've spent a lot of time for many years in New Orleans and I get inspired by the city, the chefs, the food and most of all the spirit of the people there.

Q: What’s your favorite time and place to paint?

Jennifer Garant: I love waking up before dawn and painting in my studio because there are no distractions, no phones ringing, etc.  That's when I do my best painting.

Q: Who is your inspiration as an artist? 

Jennifer Garant: It is a very long list, but Modigliani is at the top.

Q: What do you love about knowing people all over the world have your art hanging in their homes?

Jennifer Garant: I do enjoy hearing from friends and family saying, “Hey I saw your chefs at this restaurant in Paris!” or other places around the world. I'm just grateful to hear that people enjoy my art and I know my whimsical paintings bring smiles to people’s faces.

Many might associate art as nothing more than fine art paintings and canvas art paintings. In reality, art does much more than beautify a space. All types of art forms, like painting, music, dancing and writing, can heal and make a profound impact on the mind. While often the value of an arts education is popular in discourses over a child's development, the benefits of art therapy can extend a lifetime.

Painting and Writing

Many who participate in art related activities report increased levels of happiness. The act of immersing oneself in an artistic endeavor is a great source of pride for many. It creates an opportunity to forget stresses, anxieties and tensions and instead focus on the task at hand. It stimulates the creative and problem-solving areas of the brain.

 Taking part in art activities is also an opportunity to release pent-up feelings. Many suffering from mental strains use art as a tool to express, in new and less threatening ways, what they are feeling. The mere act of pondering a painting can have relaxation and mental health benefits.

For instance, focusing on paintings, fine art paintings, or canvas art paintings, have been shown to inspire deep, almost meditative, states that occur in the conscious and subconscious levels of the brain. Writing has the same therapeutic effect. Both forms can also evoke forgotten feelings. Observing and participating in art activities can also lead to greater critical-thinking.

Dance

Fortunately, these feelings of accomplishment and joy are not limited to an individual self. Interactive art forms, chiefly dance, can impact entire communities. Dancing can promote community, or community-building, cooperation and facilitate dialogue. Many community nonprofit organizations are using dance to relay sensitive subject matter; e.g. immigration, racism and identity. No one should discount the power of physical touch either. In a hyper-digital world, many are craving human touch and tactile interaction.

Music

The vibration and energy in music create states of relaxation and healing. Buddhists incorporate the ubiquitous “om” sound in relaxation exercises, like meditation.

Music has been linked to assisting patients with Alzheimer's recall their memory. Research studies have concluded that classical music can ease anxieties; many teachers resort to playing classical music before a test.

Although the artworks missing rank in the millions, a mere $5,000 reward is being offered for their return. The FBI is asking people to report theft if they see any of the following items or paintings “adorning the walls of a friend’s home.”

In the case of the great Paris art heist from “La Musee D’art Moderne” in 2010, stolen artworks included Matisse, Braques, Leger, Modigliani and Picasso paintings.  While the man in the mask who stole these out of the museum sounds like a snapshot out of a film, it gets crazier.

Perhaps the most absurd case of art theft we have heard of was the removal of a painting of the Madonna by Leonardo Da Vinci from a museum in the UK in 2003. Thieves hassled the guard and threw the painting out the window, telling observers that they were police and they were practicing. The painting was later recovered from a law firm in Scotland.
